About The Event
The Media Studies Department of Kinnaird College for Women successfully organized an awareness seminar on Media Literacy, featuring Mr. Ikram Barkat, Director General of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) as the keynote speaker. Mr. Ikram Barkat has been bringing over 27 years of experience in public service to his role and has demonstrated a commitment to enhancing media standards and media literacy among people. The event took place on 12th March at Hladia Hall and was attended by Principal Prof. Dr Iram Anjum, Dean of Social Sciences and Humanities Dr Masha Asad Khan, Dean of Post Graduate Programs Dr Asma Awan, Dean of Life Sciences Dr Hooria, Dean of Natural Sciences Dr Rahila Huma, Dean of Intermediate Dr Hellen Khokhar faculty members, students and media enthusiasts.
The seminar commenced with a warm welcome note by Dr. Masha Asad Khan, Dean of Social sciences and humanities who highlighted the significance of media literacy in today’s digital era. Mr. Ikram Barkat then took the stage, emphasizing the critical role of media literacy in combating misinformation, disinformation understanding media ethics, and ensuring responsible media consumption. He also elaborated on PEMRA’s regulatory framework and its impact on media practices in Pakistan.
Followed by the session there was a Q&A segment where students and faculty had the opportunity to discuss pressing concerns related to media regulation, digital misinformation, and how PEMRA is playing their role in combating misinformation and disinformation in electronic and digital landscapes.
The event concluded with an inspiring ending note by Principal Prof. Dr. Iram Anjum, who commended the speaker for such thoughtful and informative session, appreciated the efforts of the Media Studies Department in fostering awareness about responsible media consumption and reinforce the commitment to media literacy. As a gesture of gratitude, a token of appreciation was presented to Mr. Ikram Barkat for his valuable contribution.
